What is complex regional pain syndrome?

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a progressive neurological condition that causes severe pain, joint stiffness, and skin changes, among other symptoms. CRPS typically develops after an injury or surgery, or in association with conditions like:

  • Infection
  • Cancer
  • Neck injury
  • Stroke
  • Heart attack

The cause of CRPS is not fully understood, but current studies suggest symptoms happen because of nerve damage that occurs during surgery, illness, or injury.

What are the symptoms of CRPS?

Persistent pain that lasts more than six months is the characteristic symptom of CRPS. Typically, CRPS-related pain affects only one extremity, such as the arm or leg, and isn’t relieved by over-the-counter medications or other at-home treatments.

Along with severe pain and tenderness, symptoms may include:

  • Joint stiffness
  • Abnormal sweating
  • Severe swelling
  • Changes in the color and texture of the skin
  • Weakness or lack of coordination of the affected joint

In some cases, CRPS may cause abnormal movements, such as jerking, twitching, or tremors. Symptoms may resolve after a year or more or, in some cases, may last a lifetime.

How is CRPS diagnosed?

Currently, there are no definitive diagnostic studies that specifically test for CRPS. Dr. Celis uses his extensive knowledge and experience to rule out other conditions that may cause your symptoms. He bases your diagnosis on physical assessment and diagnostic studies, including blood work, X-ray, ultrasound, or MRI.

What are the treatments for CRPS?

Dr. Celis and the team at California Pain Group offer extensive experience as well as expert diagnosis and treatment for CRPS. As part of your initial consultation, Dr. Celis creates a personalized plan of care that may include innovative therapies, such as:

  • IV infusion therapy
  • Spinal cord stimulation
  • Peripheral nerve stimulation
  • Nerve block

Medication management is also a significant aspect of CRPS treatment. Often, effective treatment requires a combination of medications that include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), antidepressants, oral corticosteroids, blood pressure medications, anticonvulsant medications, and opioid analgesics.

If you have CRPS, Dr. Celis and the team at California Pain Group commit to helping you find relief. Call or schedule an appointment with their office today for a personalized plan of care.
